Security Measures in Schools

Security Measures in Schools

Here in the UK, we may not have to deal with the kinds of issues that are common to schools in the USA, but security and the safety of our children is still an important consideration for all our educational establishments.

While there are no specific legal duties that schools in the UK are required to undertake to protect their pupils, government guidance does state that they should have “plans in place to enable them to manage and respond to incidents related to school security”, together with “procedures for controlling access and barring individuals from school premises”.

Meanwhile, given the ever tighter budgets within which schools need to operate these days, it’s also important that they do all they can to tackle the permanent threats of theft and vandalism.

But what kind of measures should our schools and colleges be taking to protect their property and the children and students in their care? It’s not a small undertaking – after all, some of our schools have huge numbers of students, staff and visitors on their sites every day. For example, Hounslow Town Primary School in West London has capacity for 1,200 children, while the Robert Clack comprehensive school in the Borough of Barking and Dagenham has capacity for 2,400 pupils.

These circumstances mean that head teachers, governors and managers have a daily challenge to ensure that all those on school premises have the levels of protection expected by those who have entrusted their children to their care.

This article will take a look at some of the tools available to support school staff and managers in that duty of care.

Security Measures in Schools

CCTV security cameras

In all matters of safety and security, CCTV and surveillance cameras are an effective weapon that can be used to both prevent crime and violence, and provide valuable evidence against offenders. They’re a 24-hour solution that can support safety during the day by helping to prevent bullying and anti-social behaviour, and provide site security at all times by discouraging theft, vandalism and trespassing.

Access control

Prevention is always better than cure, and when it comes to protecting students from harm during the school day, an access control and door entry system that stops unauthorised people from entering the premises – and the individual buildings within it – should be one of the key security tools employed. Simple solutions such as keyfob access are relatively straightforward and inexpensive to operate, but can provide the confidence parents want that their children are secure and safe on their school premises.

Intruder alarms

Schools tend to have plenty of expensive equipment on site these days, making them a tempting target for potential thieves. An effective intruder alarm system strategically positioned by an experienced security expert can discourage even the most persistent intruder. And backed up by our security system monitoring service, you’ll have the confidence of knowing that you’ve got the most comprehensive protection every hour of the day and every day of the year.

Regular security risk assessments and ongoing maintenance

Once you’ve got a security system in place that you’re satisfied with, that doesn’t mean you can become complacent. It’s vital that you regularly review your site and procedures to ensure that the highest levels are being maintained and that no new threats or vulnerable entry points have emerged. Meanwhile, making sure that your security measures and equipment are continuing to work effectively for you is only possible by ensuring they are serviced on at least an annual basis.
