How to Protect Your Building Site From Theft

How to Protect Your Building Site From Theft

Building sites are an increasing target for criminal gangs and opportunistic thieves – so much so that even people who work in construction are realising that they can boost their income by taking advantage of the too lax security that too often exists in the industry.

The latest statistics suggest that crime is costing the construction industry £800 million a year – but with those figures already several years out of date, and companies reporting more instances of theft on their sites year on year, the actual figure is now likely to be considerably higher.

We explored the statistics surrounding theft on building sites in some depth in this separate article – this time, we’re going to make some practical suggestions as to what you can do about it if it’s your construction business that’s suffering.

How to protect your building site from theft

Secure your site

One of the most basic ways you can prevent people from stealing from your site is to make it hard for them to get into it in the first place. Secure fencing is a good start and can be combined with lighting to make scaling it undetected under cover of darkness even harder. To make it even safer, a perimeter sensor alarm system will pick up on anyone who does try to get round these barriers.

CCTV cameras

Perhaps the most effective tool in the fight against crime for businesses all types – read our previous article on this subject for some of the statistics that can back up this statement – CCTV cameras have the double advantage of both deterring and catching those with criminal intent on your construction site.

If you think that setting up a full CCTV system is going to be an expensive and time-consuming solution for what might only be a relatively short-term issue, we can provide portable temporary cameras ideal for just this kind of environment.

And don’t be shy about letting those working on your site know that they’re included in those you’re keeping a close eye on – in fact, under data protection laws, you have to tell them, anyway – because it’s estimated that over a quarter of the crimes taking place on building sites are being committed by employees.

Keep valuable tools and equipment out of sight

Chance thieves – who make up 40% of those stealing from building sites – are mainly going to be tempted to try their luck when they can see something that could make the risk pay off. So, at the end of each day, take the time to ensure that anything worth stealing is well out of sight – for the really valuable stuff, try keeping them in a restricted area that only those with the right authorisation can enter. And if you’re wondering how you can do that…

Access control

Knowing who’s coming into, moving around and going out of your site – and when they do it – is a key part of any good commercial security system. Access control and door entry systems ensure only those with the right authorisation can do any of those things, and can even provide timestamps, so that if something does happen, you’ll know who was around at the time.

Here at Scutum South East, we can design and install a suitable setup that works best for your site and your budget, even if you’re looking for a short-term solution for a relatively quick project. That can mean anything from relatively simple – but still extremely secure – keypad and keyfob systems to video door entry systems that allow you to visually identify someone (or their credentials) before allowing them access.
