How Much Does an Access Control System Cost?

A reliable and effective security system for your business can be worth its weight in gold if it provides comprehensive protection for your premises, assets and staff.

Having said that, there still has to be a limit as to what you’ll want to spend, so it’s natural that one of the first things you’ll want to know is the likely cost of having one installed.

In this article, we’re looking at the practical benefits of an access control system, what types are available and what is likely to affect the cost of getting the one that’s right for your business installed.

How Much Does an Access Control System Cost?

What is an access control system?

Access control systems put you in charge of who is entering, leaving and passing through key points at your commercial premises. So whether you want to be able to monitor all your visitors or you want to restrict access to parts of your buildings containing sensitive data or valuable items, there’s a solution available that will do the job for you.

You can find out more about access control systems in these previous blogs on why your business needs an access control system and role-based vs rule-based access control.

Types of access control systems

Here at Scutum South East, we have a comprehensive selection of access control systems available to our customers, with different solutions suitable for different premises and different budgets. Each uses the latest technology to provide reliable yet affordable protection, with our experts working closely with you to identify the best solution for your particular circumstances.

  • Keypad – access is allowed only to those who have been issued with the code required to allow entry.
  • Keyfob – a radio-controlled fob, issued to an authorised person, is held close to a reader on the access point, triggering release of the locking mechanism.
  • Swipe card – popular with hotels, the swipe card is similar in concept to the keyfob, but needs to be physically passed through the reader rather than just held close to it.
  • Video – one of the most secure systems, as access is permitted only to familiar faces or to those who can provide identification to whoever is monitoring the camera feed.
  • ANPR vehicle recognition – this system can be used at vehicle access points, gates and car parks to identify and allow access to vehicles with pre-registered licence plates.

How much does an access control system cost?

There are so many variables involved that providing a comprehensive answer to this common question is extremely difficult. These are just some of the major factors likely to affect the final price of your own access control system:

  • The system you choose

Inevitably, some systems are more expensive to buy and install than others. For example, key fob and swipe card systems need the fobs and cards that are issued to authorised people, unlike a keypad system. Meanwhile, a wireless door entry system is much cheaper to install than a hardwired one.

  • The size of your company

A large organisation operating from large premises – perhaps with multiple separate buildings – is likely to need a more expensive access control system than a small retail store.

  • Number of access points

It’s not just size that matters when it comes to security. Some small premises can have multiple important access points that need monitoring and/or protecting.

  • Brand

You can buy a cheap branded access control system and install it yourself if you really want to save money. However, you won’t have the confidence that comes with knowing that a security expert has installed a reliable and proven system in the most effective way. Nor will you be able to take advantage of the access control maintenance you can get from a company like Scutum South East.
