Fire Door Installation

Fire doors represent an essential part of any fire stopping policy, as they can prevent smoke and flames from spreading quickly through a building. That can both allow those within to escape to a place of safety and grant extra time for the fire and rescue service to attend and tackle the fire before it does too much damage.

But just having fire doors isn’t enough – they need to be professionally installed with regard to the extensive regulations that govern their use. This means that your fire door fitters need to incorporate elements such as intumescent seals that ensure there are no gaps for smoke to get through and self-closing devices so that the doors cannot be accidentally left open.

As leading fire door installers for London, Surrey and the rest of South East England, we have the experience and expertise to ensure your doors meet the requirements dictated by your property’s fire risk assessment as well as all statutory demands of Building Regulations and the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005.

Fire Door Installation FAQs

What are the legal requirements for fire doors?

The general regulations for fire doors are quite extensive and can vary depending on what type of building yours is. They cover elements such as how they fit into a compartmentalisation policy, their installation and their maintenance. Most of the regulations can be found in Building Regulations Approved Document B and the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005. In 2023, new regulations governing fire doors in multi-storey residential buildings were brought in – you can read about these in detail by clicking here.

What makes a door a fire door?

A fire door needs to be able to withstand the heat of a fire for a minimum of thirty minutes. Each fire door has a rating that indicates how long it can withstand a fire, and all associated elements in the door – from intumescent seals and hinges to the frames and any glazing – must have the same rating as the door itself. Read more about this subject in our previous blog.

Can anyone fit a fire door in the UK?

Your fire door must be installed by a competent person, with the skills, experience and training to do the job to the exacting standards that the regulations demand.

How do I know if I need fire doors?

Your requirement for fire doors in your commercial premises will be dictated by the findings of your fire risk assessment. This will include both where they need to be installed and what fire rating they need to have.
