Fire Detection & Alarm Systems FAQs

In which areas does Scutum South East provide fire detection and alarm systems?

Scutum South East provides fire detection and alarm systems for businesses operating in London, Surrey and the wider area of South East England.

How do I know which fire alarm system is right for me?

If you’re not sure about the right fire alarm system for your business, one of our experienced team can visit your premises and recommend the system they feel is best suited for your particular situation.

Does Scutum South East offer free consultations?

Yes. You can always give us a call for an initial chat. If you like what you hear, we can follow that up with a free site visit to assess your premises’ fire safety needs and make appropriate recommendations.

Does Scutum South East service/repair fire detection and alarm systems?

Yes, as well as designing and installing fire detection and alarm systems, we also offer ongoing servicing and maintenance contracts and one-off repairs.

Why do fire detection and alarm systems need to be serviced?

Regular maintenance is a legal requirement under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, but that’s not the only reason you should get it done. As with any piece of modern technology, fire detection and alarm systems can develop issues over time that can mean they may not work as effectively as they should. Regular servicing means that you have the peace of mind of knowing that a trained and fully-qualified expert has recently inspected, checked and approved your system.

How disruptive is the process of getting fire detection and alarm systems installed?

We’ll do everything we can to keep any disruption in your business to a minimum, but a certain amount has to be expected. For the fastest and least disruptive installation, ask about our wireless fire alarms.

Is Scutum South East accredited for fire alarm installation?

We’re fully accredited for all the fire safety solutions we offer, meaning that you can have the confidence of knowing that your system has been designed, installed and serviced by a fully trained and qualified professional.

Who is responsible for maintaining and servicing fire detection and alarm systems in a commercial building?

Every business needs to have a designated responsible person to manage all aspects of fire safety, and this will include ensuring that all fire detection and alarm systems in a commercial building are regularly maintained. The relevant legislation can be found in Article 17 of the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, which states that: “the responsible person must ensure that the premises and any facilities, equipment and devices provided in respect of the premises under this Order…are subject to a suitable system of maintenance and are maintained in an efficient state, in efficient working order and in good repair”.

What are the four main types of fire alarm systems?

Ionisation – these alarms are good for detecting the small particles of smoke generated by fast-burning fires such as those involving paper

Photoelectric – also known as optical, these alarms are triggered when smoke passes through a beam of light and are good for detecting small or smouldering fires

Combination ionisation/photoelectric – because they incorporate both previous types of alarm, these are considered to be more reliable and are generally recommended for use in all rooms except kitchens

Heat – as the name suggests, these alarms respond to changes in temperature rather than by detecting smoke, making them useful in locations that might generate false alarms in smoke detectors, such as kitchens or dusty places like lofts and garages
